In 2004 some of the greatest Bulgarian personalities have gone. Among them – Mr. Gueorgui Mindov. Born 1937 in Sofia. For more than 30 years, this excellent swim trainer has devoted to SC Slavia (Sofia).  Bistra Gospodinova (now living in Croatia) – one of the best BUL women's swimmer ever is his great pride. Thank you Mister Mindov! You'll stay forever in our hearts!

 Christmas swimming festival in Vratsa... 

In Vratsa (North-west part of Bulgaria) the Christmas swimming festival has been held. At the event have been participated 120 kids. Vratsa is the town of the unforgettable BUL swimmers: Tsvetanka Tsvetanova, Tsvety Krussaschky and Petar Petrov.

 The first Iron Man of Bulgaria... 

Gueorgui Popov 20-year old  Bulgarian a former swimmer and now triathlon athlete is living in USA. He is the very first BUL Iron Man. He has participated in several triathlon competitions across USA. Constantly is ranked among top 5...  On September 18th in the State Ohio (4 km swimming, 180 km cycling, 42 km running) the Bulgarian touched the second. Mr. Popov is working as life-guard at the Erie Lake.

106 kids at X'mas event in Velingrad... 

In the town of Velingrad 106 kids started at the Christmas swimming tournament. There were present clubs from Velingrad, Plovdiv and Blagoevgrad. The young swimmers were divided into 3 age groups. After the event the threat has been organized.

 Swimming show at the Sport center “Light”, Sofia... 

On 19.12.2004 at the sport center “Light” (http://www.sports-light.com ) in Sofia, the swimming show has been held. 25 kids have been involved. The great attractions were two 2.5-year old kids. They demonstrated the crawl-legs with the swim-board.  Mr. Anton Mihaylov – the unique Bulgarian FINA world swimming Champion (Masters) conducts in swim teaching process at the Sport Center  !!!

 In Vienna, the only one BUL swimmer out of Top 20... 

In Vienna at the just concluded European Short Course Championships 2004 the only one Bulgarian swimmer didn't get into European Top 20. Gueorgui Palazov is ranked 27th in 100 m Fly (time 0:55.15), 35th in 50 m Fly (time 0:25.02) and 54th in 100 m Free (time 0:50.90).

 The Gold for Bulgarian swimmer No.1 at the U.S. Open 2004... 

The great Bulgarian swim star Mikhail (Mike) Alexandrov has won the gold medal in 200 m Ind.Medlay at the just concluded USA Open Swimming Championships 2004 been held in the City of San Antonio (Texas). 465 swimmers in total from 6 countries participated in the events.

 Igor Kolitchev breaks three times the records

On the 27.11.2004 in Sofia, the “Day of the sprint” Tournament has been held. The big star on the event was Igor Kolitchev Jr. (the son of Igor Kolitchev father – former swimmer). The new BUL swimming pearl breaks three times the National records – 100 m I.M. twice – 1:00.95 and 59.43 and 50 m Breast – 29.77. The best results have been distinguished with prize money.

The EB of the IOC on 25.11.2004 in Lausanne according to case Mr. Ivan Slavkov decided: 1) that Mr Slavkov has violated the ethical principles set out in the Olympic Charter and the IOC Code of Ethics, thereby seriously tarnishing the reputation of the Olympic Movement; 2) to propose the expulsion of Mr. Slavkov to the 117th IOC Session, pursuant to Rule 16.3.8.2 of the Olympic Charter; 3) until the Session's decision, to suspend Mr. Slavkov and deprive him of all the rights and prerogatives and functions deriving from the membership, pursuant to Rule 16.3.8.3 of the Olympic Charter.

Dubai expects to host Stoytchev and Moralieva

In the City of Dubai (OAE) the 3rd FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships will be held (from 27th November – 2th December 2004).  The best 95 open-water swimmers are expected. Among them two of  the Bulgarians – the great world OWS swimming star Mr. Petar Stoytchev and the rising one Ms. Ivanka Moralieva. Three disciplines (5, 10, 25 km – both in men and women concurrence) at Dubai Creek Park will be conducted. We wish them best luck and calm water !!!

Gary Hall Junior wants to create an USA swimmers trade-union. Reason – the behavior of FINA on Indianapolis SC World Championships regarding the personal advertising contracts of the swimmers and visible equipment and logos round the pool deck. Mr. Hall Junior has been already contacted the USA and World swim star Michael Phelps about the tender.

  “Days of the swimming styles” Tournament in Sofia... 

In the 97th school in Sofia the “Days of the swimming styles” Tournament has been held. The organizer of the event was SSC “Shipka” Sofia. 200 swimmers from 8 Bulgarian swimming clubs have been present. The best results were achieved from Stanislav Boudinov (born 1993) in 50 m Back – 0:36.1 and Ekaterina Avramova (born 1991) in 100 m Free – 1:03.05 and in 100 m Back – 1:09.70. Both swimmers are SSC “Shipka” members.

In the town of Skopije (FYROM) 500 swimmers have announced ultimatum (48 hours) to the authorities. Reason – in FYR of Macedonia not single one swimming pool in use. The best FYROM swimmer Mr. Alexander Malenko has even intimidated with a hunger strike.

On 27.08.2005 in the town of Tsarevo (BUL South Black Sea coast) the classical swimming marathon (42.195 km.) will be held. The Prize Money Fund will be $ US 42 000. Fourfold winner of the FINA Open water swimming cup Petar Stoytchev has been nominated as a consultant of that event. 12 men’s and 8 women’s top marathon swimmers are expected.

  Michael Phelps arrested 'cause of drunken driving! 

According to Associated Press report, Michael Phelps has been arrested and charged because of  drunken driving.  The AP notes that also the legal drinking age of State of Maryland is 21. The swimming super star is 19-year old.  “I want to say that last week I've made a mistake”, Phelps told to the Associated Press Agency.

  800 spectators at "Stefan Popov–Zamorata" Tournament! 

The sixth edition of the International swimming tournament Stefan Popov – Zamorata have joined 365 athletes from 15 swimming clubs across Bulgaria. There are also 3 clubs out of Bulgaria – two from Serbia and Montenegro and one from FYR of Macedonia. There was a huge interest regarding the competition – 800 spectators! It could be said:  A spirit of BUL swimming sport is returning !!!

  The head of South African Swimming called to a Parliament 

The head of South African Swimming Mr. Gideon Sam, has been called to testify to a Parliament according to a report from the SABC.  Mr. Butana Komphela (the Chairman of the Sport and Recreation Committee of the Parliament) wants Mr. Sam to explain why, ten years after the abolishment of apartheid, the swimming sport remains almost “white”.

Meet “Stefan Popov – Zamorata”... 

The 6th edition of the traditional swimming Tournament “Stefan Popov – Zamorata” (to the remembrance on the Bulgarian swim legend) will be held on November 6-7, 2004 by the in-door LC swimming pool “Spartak” in Sofia (BUL). It is expected that more then 280 athletes from four Balkan countries will take part in the events – Bulgaria, FYR of Macedonia, Greece, Serbia and Montenegro.

A new BUL swim book is published ... 

  A new book “Bulgarian's swimming sport” is published at the end of October, 2004 in Sofia. This book is the second work from the issue that contribute to the history of Bulgarian swimming sport. “Bulgarian's swimming sport” is financially supported by the Bulgarian sport totalizer with assistance of “Alveni 2004” LTD and personally by Mr. Nikolay Krastev. 
  The compiler and the main author is Ivan Tsanov, well-known BUL swim historian and the Balkan swim expert . Additional authors are: Boris Pargavelov, Vassilen Dimitrov, Vassil Stankovich, Nikola Todorov, Nikolay Krastev, Petar Guertchev, Stoyan Troskov and Khristo Konstantinov.
  The book includes 21 articles, 51 photos and 171 pages. 
A huge interest for the book exists not only in Bulgaria but also from BUL swimmers round the world. There are orders from USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Russia, the Balkan countries. The total print of the “Bulgarian's swimming sport” is limited and after first market week it has been almost completely merchandised.

A new swimming pool is opened... 

In the town of Sevlievo (population of 25,000 citizens) the new swimming pool is built. Mr. Vassil Ivanov – Liciano, Bulgarian Minister of the youth and sport, has been honored to open the pool. It’s expected that more than 1,500 pupils will get chance to have various swimming activities. Congratulations!

  Velingrad municipality supports pupils to compete in Spain !!!

Municipality of Velingrad will support the Velingrad’s pupils to take part in the swimming pupil’s competition in Palma de Malorca (Spain) from12-16 May 2005. The delegation will include 6 schoolboys, 6 schoolgirls, 2 teachers and a Mr. Katsarov, Head (physical education expert from the town of Pazardzhik). It’s a great success of the Velingrad’s swimmers and their trainers – Mr. Velko Kleshkov, Mr. Anton Mitrov, Mr. Khristo and Mrs. Lyubov Doksinov’s.

The Baltimore barracuda will try to reach 7 gold medals.  The only Bulgarian swimmer at this event is Mikhail (Mike) Alexandrov. The son of Plamen Donchev, BUL swim legend  will participate in six disciplines. Mike has chances to enter at least one semi-final.

Mr. Emil Kyulev (born 1957) is the President of the Board of directors of the Bulgarian Swimming Federation. Mr. Kyulev is the former elite swimmer also member of the BUL junior’s National team with the main style – breaststroke. Now as the banker he’s one of the richest men in Bulgaria and throughout the Balkans. The main business interests of Mr. Kyulev are in the frame of banking, insurance and tourism.

BUL Masters Championships 2004...

In the town of Sandansky (South-West part of BUL) the XXVII Bulgarian Masters Swimming Championships has been held. 202 Athletes from 12 swimming clubs across Bulgaria were present. The oldest swim lady was Souzi Aronova (84 years) respectively the oldest swimmer was Atanas Tchorbadzhiev (80 years). The complex team winner (both men and women) is the team of Levsky (Sofia), second - Tcherno more (Varna), third – Sliven.

Tamas Szechy, great Hungarian Coach has died...

At age of 73 the legendary Hungarian swimming coach Tamas Szechy died. He coached swimmers who won 15 Olympic medals. Among them: Andras Hargitay, Tamas Darnyi and Attila Czene.

XXVII Bulgarian Masters Swimming Championships 2004...
XXVII Bulgarian Masters Swimming Championship will be held in the town of Sandansky from 18 to 19 of September (Long course swimming pool with mineral water). Bulgarian Masters Championship is the oldest event in the Region of the Balkans and the Bulgarian Masters movement is very good developed. About 180 athletes from 12 swimming clubs are expected this year. The main favorites are the teams of Levsky (Sofia), Tcherno More (Varna), Mladost’95 (Plovdiv) and the host club – Vikhren (Sandansky).

This year as a member of Evanstin Edu (USA), Mike took part in New York 2004 NCAA SC Champs seting the next personal and BUL standards in 100 Breast 1:00.54 ; 200 IM 1:58.62; 400 IM 4:12.77... In the US Grand Prix Indianapolis 2004 (LC) in 100 Breast 1:03.25; in 200 IM 2:03.38...Just in the last year and a half, Alexandrov set 15 new Bulgarian records... Three BUL swimmers took part at the Bosporus Marathon, Turkey

On the 16-th edition of the traditionally Bosporus Marathon between Europe’s and Asian’s part of Turkey, three well-known BUL swimmers have taken part. Dimitar Videnov in the 25-30 years old age group takes the gold medal, Krassimir Nikolov (46-50) gains the silver medal and Vassil Dobrev (56-60) has been decorated also with silver. Ivanka Moralieva wins the sixth edition of FINA swimming open water World Cup Capri – Naples at the distance of 36 km. The new Bulgarian  princess of the waves was ahead with only 1 second in front of  A. Maurer (GER). Congratulations!
In the same race Petar Stoytchev was second after Yuri Koudinov (RUS). The next WC edition will be held in Atlantic city (USA) on 24 of July – 37 km race.

In the town of Sandansky (South-western Bulgaria) the Bulgarian State Cadet Swimming Championships (born 1990-1991) has been held. The most impressive result has been achieved by Mariya Zlatkova (SC Levsky – Sofia) in 200 m Freestyle – 2:12.4.  At the end  SC “Mladost” 91 (Plovdiv) is crowned as the complex team winner , the second team was SC “Shipka” (Sofia).

The Olympic fire for the hours was in the capital of Bulgarian on the 7th of July. The Olympic torch has been met from the BUL Vice-Premier Mr. Nikolay Vassilev, the President of the BUL Olympic Committee Mr. Ivan Slavkov and the Greek Ambassador in Sofia Mr. Prokopios Mandzouranis. The first Olympic fire’s runner was the BUL astronaut Gueorgui Ivanov. The Olympic torch has been carried also from the BUL swimming champion Mrs. Tanya Bogomilova

Velingrad (BUL), --- XXXV BUL State swimming Championships called “Golden fish” – for the youngest BUL swimmers (born 1994/1995) has been held in the picturesque town of Velingrad on 12-13th of June 2004. The mayor of the town Mr. Fidel Beev opened the competition. 351 swimmers and 35 BUL swimming clubs were presented. The first places were occupied by the traditional strongest Bulgarian teams such as: “Mladost” (Plovdiv), Levsky (Sofia), Iris (Rousse) and “Shipka” (Sofia).

Ivanka Moralieva Reached the Historical Medal at Madrid 2004...

Ivanka Moralieva
The historical bronze medal in 25 km open water swimming won Ivanka Moralieva at European Swimming Championships in Madrid. 20 years old athlete swam the race 4:41:21.2 hours. The medal is the first distinction for the BUL woman swimming sport after the two bronze medals of Tanya Bogomilova (Athens 1991) on the Euro Swimming Championships level.

Bulgarian Black sea coast short of Lifeguards

Mr. Delyan Droumev (BUL Red Cross Chief – district Varna) said that there are not enough Lifeguards for BUL Black sea coast. The main reason is the low paymaster and the emigration of the BUL Lifeguards mainly to USA and OAE. The BUL Lifeguards are very well qualified and responsible. Mr. Droumev called on beach and swimming pool concessionaries to speed up the recruitment of lifeguards.

Petar Stoychev  Winner of FINA World Cup 10K  in Dubai (UAE)

DUBAI, UAE, May '04--- Mr. Petar Stoychev, overall winner of the 2001, 2002 and 2003 Emirate's editions, won his fourth straight 10km race in Dubai, the third event of the 2004 edition of the FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup held on May 7. Stoychev finished in 2 hours 4 minutes 56 seconds. This is his 14th victory in the Series of Marathon Swimming World Cup, but only his first in the 2004 tour. Stéphane Gomez (FRA) second in the race in Dubai, maintains his leadership of this year’s overall ranking. The second Bul OWS star Ivan Ivanov swum the 10 K race in his  worthy time 2:17:17

The Medals aren’t just the illusions for BUL swimmers in Madrid

Mr. Gueorgui Dangalakov, the National HeadCoach expects the medals  from two Bulgarian swimmers at the LEN European Swimming Championships Madrid 2004 (10–16 of May). The biggest chance to obtain the medals has Petar Stoytchev (1976) – triple FINA World Open Water Champion who is entered for 10 km and 25 km Open Water races. If the water temperature should be bellow 16 degree, Stoytchev will put on the swimsuit. Mikhail Alexandrov (1985) – the son of Plamen Dontchev, BUL swimming legend,  will try to reach  medals in 100 m and  200 m Breast,  200 m and 400 m Ind.Medley. For the Madrid’s team also Raychin Antonov and Ivan Anguelov  who will participate in the Tournament in Hanya (GRE) at the end of May, these would be  the last chances to fulfill the Olympic “B” standards.

He’ll also find himself in the FINA OWS Marathon in Dubai, May 7th to pluck the part of the award fund of over 15,000 $...

Dimitar Petrov  (born in 1971, Sofia), spent the most of his swimming career in Bulgaria. Graduated at the National Sports Academy, Sofia, he recently pursued degree of Business and Informational Technologies at the Wheeling Jesuit University, Wheeling, WV. As a swimmer he accomplished FINA World Champion in OWS (1996), FINA World Master Champion (1998), 4th place at US Nationals  25K (1998), 5th place and 15 NCAA Division II All-American titles (2000-2003), 7th place at Euro Championship SCM (1989), the National Record Holder (1988-1993), also ranked at World Top 50 (in 1988).

Raycnin Antonov set the Olympic's B standard at the Missouri Champs 2004 (US) 

In the frame of the Championships of the US State Missouri, Raycnin Antonov (BUL student of the South-West University) swam our 50 m Free (time 0:23.64 ) and 100 m Free (time 0:51.76) long course pool. Mr. Gueorgui Dangalakov, Bul National Head-Coach said that this swimmer is in his field of vision for the biggest competition of the year. Till now three other BUL swimmers have opened the way toAthens 2004: Mikhail (Mike) Alexandrov, Petar Stoytchev and Gueorgui Palazov. The ponetial chance is also in the hands of Valentin Milkov (student in the Indiana University, US).

Bulgarian National Cadet Championships 2004 

The BUL National Cadet Championships 2004 (short course) were finished in the town of Plovdiv this weekend. The Champs  took place by the 25-m indoor municipality's pool upon the organization of SC "Mladost". 230 competitors from 30 domestic clubs participated in the events  those have been held from 12  - 14 of March 2004. Total team ranking: 1) SC "Mladost" (Plovdiv), 2) SC "Levsky" (Sofia), 3) SC "Vihren" (Sandansky)...

Topsport Magazine, Sofia, presented our BUL First Swim Site...

  The Bulgarian daily sport Magazine “Topsport” (circulation of about 23 500 ) has promoted the First Bulgarian Swimming Site. Taking this opportunity, one should say that 11th of March 2004 is a remarkable data in the short history of this Bulgarian Web place, because of the fact that  it's for the the first time that the web-based Bulgarian swimming texts is dedicated not only to a swim auditorium, officials, etc., but also to a wide sport public.

Bulgarian National Championships 2004 for kids

The BUL National Championships for kids (born 1992 and 1993) took place in the city of Plovdiv (6-7.03.2004).  In the sport center of “Mladost’73”, by the 25 m in-door swimming pool,  33 teams with 260 participants were present. In 50 m Freestyle girls the gold medal won Tedi Barzanova (Levsky Sofia) time 0:32.20. The first team place by points (both boys and girls concurrence ) has been reached by the SSC “Shipka” Sofia, and the second was SC “Levsky” Sofia.

The water-polo player drew up the Holly Cross in Varna
17 years old Stoil Yanev drew up the Holly Cross on Epiphany in Varna. The Black sea water temperature was 5 degrees above zero. Commonly 22 dare-devils attempted to catch the Holly Cross but only the water-polo succeeded.

On the other country side, in the lake located in district “Druzhba” in Sofia, 18-years old swimmer Kalin Pavlov also has drew up the Holly Cross.
 
The Epiphany ritual is believed to bring health and success. Thousands of Bulgarians watched the traditionally ceremony across the country.
