  This article is an extensive review about Masters swimming in Bulgaria written from the best Bulgarian and the Balkan Masters swimming expert – Mr. Ivan Tsanov. Interesting that the Bulgarian’s Masters Swimmers have been organized the First National Championships (in 1978) among all Balkan countries. Consecutively the past, the present and the future of the Bulgarian’s Masters swimming are viewed. The author arrives at conclusion that Bulgarian’s Masters swimming  still at the amateurish ground is developed but dispose of the huge potential.

  XXVII BUL MASTERS SWIM CHAMPIONSHIPS 18-19.09.2004, Sandansky

The team of Levsky (Sofia)- the proud complex winner - BUL Masters 2004
 
In the town of Sandansky (South-West part of Bulgaria), the XXVII Bulgarian Masters Swimming Championships has been held. 
 
202 athletes from 12 swimming clubs across Bulgaria were present. The oldest swim lady was Mrs. Souzi Aronova (84 years) respectively the oldest swimmer was Mr. Atanas Tchorbadzhiev (80 years). The complex team winner (both men and women) is the Masters team of Levsky (Sofia), second - Tcherno more (Varna) and the  third – Sliven.

The town of Banya (Central Bulgaria) was the host place for the 26-th Bulgarian Masters Swimming Championships – the oldest National Championships at the Balkan Peninsula. 194 swimmers from all Bulgarian regions took part in the event that was held from 20 to 21 of September 2003. 
   
Many of the former Bulgarian swimming legends swam at the competition: Mr. Stefan Gueorguiev (Neptun 95 – Plovdiv), Mrs. Daniela Vakareeva (Vikhren – Sandansky), Mrs. Khriska Pejtcheva (Tcherno more – Varna), Mrs. Zhanette Slavtcheva (Levsky – Sofia), Mrs. Ani Kostova (Levsky – Sofia), Mrs. Zinaida Kononova (Levsky – Sofia), Mr. Vassil Dobrev (Levsky – Sofia). The mising was the World Masters Champion 2002 Mr. Anton Mikhaylov (SC Anton Mikhaylov – Sofia).
 
The biggest splashes at the competition with the most impressive results were achieved by Dragomir Markov, 32-years old athlete of SC Levsky – Sofia. He set two new Bulgarian Masters Records – 50 m Fly (0:26,95) and 100 m Back (1:04,80) and won 5 gold medals.
 
The team winner – both men and women is the Swimming Club Levsky – Sofia.

On 21-22 September, 2002 town of Banya (central Bulgaria), welcomed the best Bulgarian Masters swimmers for an unforgettable competition in which friendship, fitness and understanding were at the rendevouz. The XXVth Bulgarian Masters Swimming Championship took place in 25 m out-door swimming pool with mineral water. 186 Masters swimmers (138 Men and 48 women) from 13 clubs were presented.
This event is the oldest National Championship in the Region of the Balkan Peninsula and one of the oldest in all Europe.
During the Championship 15 National Records were broken. The best achievements were as follows:
Men - Mr. Anton Mihaylov (40 - 44 years) at 50 m Breast 0:32,0.
Women - Mrs. Ani Kostova - Valkova (40 - 44 years) at 50 m  Fly 0:34,8.
The oldest men swimmer was Mr. Kostadin Stambouliev (Svishtov) - 83 years old and the oldest women swimmer was Mrs. Souzi Aronova (Sofia) - 82 years old.
Total (both men and women) team's ranking:
1. Swimming club "Tcherno more" Varna - 401 points
2. Swimming club "Levsky" Sofia - 266 points
3. Swimming club "Shipka" Sofia - 264,5 points

  TO THE HONOR OF THE FIRST BUGARIAN WORLD MASTERS SWIMMING CHAMPION

At the World Masters swimming Championship, which took place in New Zealand between 24th May and 4th April 2002, the following results were derived:
Anton Mihaylov – the first gold medal for Bulgaria from a world championship:
Results in the age group 40-45 years:
1st at 200 m Breaststroke
2nd at 100 m Breaststroke
2nd at 50 m Breaststroke

Shipka Masters Team 2001 At the European Masters swimming Championship 2001, which took place on 3-8 July 2001 in Palma de Mallorca (Spain), the Shipka SC Sofia participated with 8 veterans – 6 men and 2 women in different age groups. The veterans were divided in age groups and the youngest were 25-29 years old. It is typical for the veterans to swim for their clubs, and not for the country they've come from.
3724 sportsmen from 31 countries, representing 935 clubs from Europe participated. Germany had the most members of its delegation - 1082, and Latvia – the least – only one competitor. The people from Spain (486), Italy (345), GB (298) were also numerous. The oldest participants were German: 93 year old Hans Han and 92 year old Margrete Gotschalk. It is not an exaggeration to say that this competition was a victory of mind over the body.
